I
started playing drums in school when I was about 14-15 years old. I
used to skip classes and my music teacher would just hand me the keys
to the music room. Drumming comes naturally to me, I'm fascinated with
rythm, always have been. Maybe because my dad played percussion in the
military band when he was in the army. I actually followed in his
footseps and joined the army when I left school. But I hated it and had
to get out. I had just left the army at the age of 18 (1991) and found
all my old friends were listening to this crazy breakbeat hardcore
music. Around the same time I happened to buy a magazine for my Amiga
computer which had a floppy disc attached... this disc had a trial
version of Octamed a sample based sequencer...
I was hooked instantly and started making my own hardcore tracks... then I discovered Techno and never looked back.
When I first started, around 1991, I was producing breakbeat hardcore
tracks (think early Prodigy, Altern 8 and Acen). Then during one wild
night I will never forget, I discovered Techno music through John Peel
(RIP) and Dave Clarke on radio 1, it was love at first 'sight'. It
totally blew my mind and I couldn't wait to get home and experiment
with this 'new' sound... and I have been ever since. It took a lot of
time and patience to find my own sound... I suppose it doesn't help
being almost totally deaf in my left ear!.
